Man has employed dogs in a rich
variety of ways - as guards, guides, hunters, war machines, rodent controllers, draft animals, and foot-warmers. Whatever
you choose, you can be sure that, if treated with care and intelligence, it will repay your kindness a hundredfold in companionship
and affection. It may even become your bestfriend.

I'll introduce you to some top breeds and varieties and why many millions of people have loved and revered dogs
through the ages.... the reason behind my wanting a web site. I might put a picture of my dog on this page...or
just a picture that I especially like.

The relationship between dog and
man is that of two more or less carnivorous mammals that have shared shelter, food, weather, and fortune; exploited, quarreled
with, and fawned over one another; worked, played, and endured together for a hundred centuries

DOG DIVERSIFICATION
Because of their intelligence, versatility, and use of social cooperation within
the packs, wild dogs spread quickly around the world. Five distinct types of dogs have been identified from fossil remains
dating from the beginning of the Bronze age.
Mastiffs, Wolf-like Dogs, Greyhounds, Pointer-type dogs, and Sheep dogs.
Mastif type dogs from Tibet were domesticated in the Stone Age and later used
in battle by the Babylonians, Assyrians,Persians, and Greeks
Wolf-like dogs - similar to Spitz-type dogs, such as the Elkhound, Siberian
Husky, Keeshond, and Eskimo dogs.
The Greyhound is on of the oldest types, identified from drawings on Mesopotamian
pottery dating back 8000 years.
Pointer-type dogs were probably developd from Greyhounds for the purpose of
hunting small game.
Sheepdogs have been used to guard flocks from predators for thousand of years
and probably originated in Europe.
Since then, thousands have been developed by both artifical and natural selection.
But over the centuries many have been lost, and only about 400 remain today.
Here I might add an entry whenever I make an update to my
web site. Where appropriate, I'll include a link to the change.
